Welcome to Musing Geologist, where the wonders of the earth and the mysteries of existence intersect. My name is Mark, and I’m a lifelong learner, field geologist, and storyteller at heart. This blog is my space to explore not just the layers of rock beneath our feet, but the layers of life, the universe, and everything in between.
Raised in a Catholic home, my early years were steeped in tradition, faith, and the comforting structure of belief. It wasn’t until I stood among the rugged peaks and unyielding beauty of the mountains that I discovered a new form of worship—one that spoke through the language of nature and geology. The outdoors became my sanctuary, the rocks my scripture, and the mountain air my prayers.
Over time, my journey led me down winding and challenging paths, including a battle with addiction. But through the trials, I found recovery and a new sense of purpose as a sober companion to the world around me. The writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, and Guy Gavriel Kay provided solace and inspiration, their narratives of heroism, darkness, and hope mirroring my own struggles and triumphs.
Today, my refuge and compass are grounded in the Baha’i Faith—a luminous guide that brings harmony, unity, and perspective to my life. As humanity moves toward the apex of its shared journey, the teachings of the Baha’i Faith remind me of the interconnectedness of all things, from the smallest pebble to the grandest star.
Musing Geologist is my attempt to distill this rich tapestry of experience into words. Here, you’ll find reflections on geology, the environment, spiritual growth, and the endless dance between science and soul. It’s a place where rocks tell stories, the earth whispers secrets, and life is a never-ending excavation of meaning.
Join me as I dig deep, dream big, and share musings from the edge of wonder. Let’s explore together, one layer at a time.
